HARRISBURG – Rep. Marla Brown (R-Lawrence) will be hosting a free shredding event on Saturday, June 15, at her district office parking lot to give residents of the 9th Legislative District a chance to safeguard themselves against identity theft by having their personal documents securely destroyed.
The event will be held at 28 N. Mill St., New Castle, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“Shredding documents that contain sensitive information is one of the best ways to protect yourself from identity theft, so I am happy to provide this service to my constituents,” said Brown. “Although identity thieves prey on senior citizens especially, anyone, regardless of age, income or educational background, can be victimized.”
This event is for items that contain information such as bank accounts or Social Security numbers. Residents are asked not to bring old phone books, magazines, cards, letters, folders, newspapers, junk mail, etc., as these items can be recycled. There is no need to remove staples or paper clips, but documents should be taken out of binders and notebooks.
“As you take steps to protect your information and identity, you’ll make yourself a more difficult target for thieves and may even stop them in their tracks,” said Brown.
No advance registration is required to participate in the event. For more information, residents should call Brown’s office at 724-498-4391.
