Brown: Data Center Development Must Respect Our Communities

August 20, 2026

HARRISBURG - Rep. Marla Brown (R-Lawrence) issued the following statement after Gov. Josh Shapiro signed an executive order restricting data center development:

“My position on data centers has been clear and consistent from the start. Unfortunately, the governor has not shared that position. It appears he has finally seen the light and recognized the need for greater oversight of these massive projects.

“Pennsylvania needs economic investment and new opportunities, but that growth must come with reasonable boundaries and protections for our communities.

“There is no place for massive data centers in residential neighborhoods or on farmland. I have authored, supported and voted for legislation that reflects this position, while also working with our townships and county officials to ensure they have the support and tools they need to protect their communities.

“We need transparency, strong environmental protections and accountability. Data centers should pay their fair share, and Pennsylvania families and small businesses should never be left paying the bill for these massive projects.

“But above all, local control matters. The people who live in these communities deserve a voice in what is built in their backyards. Economic development should work for Pennsylvania families, not come at their expense.”
